Senior Cat Care Tips

Is your cat aged seven or older? If so, Fluffy may technically be a senior . . . even if she still thinks of herself as a kitten. Read on for some great tips from a Pendleton, IN vet on caring for kitties in their golden years.

Good Food

Offer your cat good, nourishing food, but don’t go overboard on fatty snacks. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes, suitable treats, and advice on changing to a senior formula.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend that Fluffy come in more often as she ages, so her health can be closely monitored. In between appointments, watch for signs of illness. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything wrong.

Playtime

Spend a few minutes a day playing with Fluffy. Playing will keep your kitty active and entertained, and is great for her both physically and mentally.

Comfy Beds

Senior kitties are very tired, and can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Offer your drowsy furball lots of comfy beds to snuggle up in for all those naps.

Beauty Routine

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her entire body when grooming herself. Help your feline buddy out by brushing her gently to remove dead fur and dander from her coat. This is a great way to spend some quality time with your pet!

Senior-Friendly Facilities

Your cat may have an easier time using a litterbox with low walls. If your home has multiple floors, put extras on every floor, so Fluffy doesn’t have to use the stairs as much. You can also get pet ramps or stairs, or just set out ottomans or footstools as kitty steps, so she can reach her favorite perches more easily.

Helping Hands

Older cats sometimes get confused easily, and may meow to show their distress. For instance, Fluffy may forget where her litterbox is, and may vocalize her frustration. Just do what you can to comfort her. Also, if you see your kitty about to jump on or off something, give her a gentle lift.

Cuddles

One of the best things you can do for Fluffy is to simply pay attention to her. Spend time with your kitty every day, and offer her lots of snuggles and love. Senior cat purrs are truly special!
