Caring for a Large Dog

Is your dog larger than life? Our canine friends come in all sizes, from tiny little teacup breeds to huge mastiffs. Big dogs have their own special charms, and can be super lovable, but they do have some specific care needs. Read on as a local Anderson, IN vet discusses caring for a big dog.

Training

Proper training is important for all dogs, even the smallest pooches. However, it’s particularly crucial for big dogs, as they can be quite dangerous if they cannot be controlled. Make sure that Fido knows—and obeys—basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.

Beds

Big dogs can smoosh regular-sized beds pretty quickly, so you’ll need to get Fido a pet bed that will support his weight. Orthopedic pet beds are great for large breeds! You can also use a child’s mattress.

Veterinary Care

Fido should be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current with his exams, vaccinations, and parasite control products. Your canine companion may also develop certain health issues, such as arthritis and/or hip dysplasia. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Nutrition

Good nutrition is very important! You’ll need to be extra careful with your canine buddy’s menu when he is a puppy. Fido will grow very large very fast, so any nutritional deficiencies or imbalances can cause serious problems down the line. Choose a good, nourishing dog food. Treats are fine, but don’t overindulge your pooch with fatty snacks. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes, recommended supplements, and suitable snacks.

Safety

Be sure to only buy products made specifically for big dogs. Fido could choke on something made for a smaller pooch! If you have a yard, make sure that your fencing is secure. We also recommend using sturdy, self-latching gates.

Aging

Did you know that big dogs can become seniors as early as age six? It may seem like just yesterday that your furry pal was a puppy, but Fido will enter his golden years before you know it. As your dog ages, you’ll need to show him some extra TLC. For instance, you may need to get pet ramps to help your pooch get around more easily. Ask your vet for specific care recommendations.
