8 Ways to Keep Your Cat From Becoming Obese

Did you know that obesity is the most common health issue our feline patients face? There are some pretty chubby furballs out there! While Fluffy is still adorable if she’s a bit pudgy, extra pounds carry some very serious health risks. Here, an Anderson, IN vet offers tips on keeping your kitty from becoming obese.

Portion Control

Portion control definitely plays a big role in kitty obesity rates. Even giving Fluffy ten calories too many a day can make her gain a pound a year. That’s a lot for a cat! Ask your vet for recommendations.

Food Choices

Many lower-quality pet foods are packed with fillers, many of which are high in carbs. Offer your furball the best food you can afford.

Snack Wisely

Treats are fine, and are actually very beneficial in helping cats feel loved. Just be sure to choose healthy snacks. Fluffy may want some of your pizza, but cooked, boneless chicken is a better choice.

Proper Meal Schedule

Be careful not to overindulge your pet. Some kitties have their humans trained to feed them on demand!

Toys and Playtime!

Fluffy probably won’t be very interested in doing laps around the kitchen. Toys and playtime are the best way to get her moving. Play with your feline pal every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Purrniture

Get Fluffy some kitty furniture that encourages her to run, jump, and climb. Cat towers and cat shelves are great for this!

Regular Weigh-Ins

Keeping track of Fluffy’s weight will help you notice if she’s gaining weight, so you can address the issue before it gets out of hand. How do you weigh a cat? First, try setting the scale out, and telling Fluffy to stay off it. She may hop right on! If that doesn’t work, weigh yourself, and then pick your furball up and weigh yourself again. The difference is your pet’s weight.

Stimulation

Pets sometimes snack out of boredom, just like people do. Birdwatching is great entertainment for cats. Offer Fluffy a good window seat. She may even like watching TV programs made for kitties.

Tips

Is your feline buddy getting chubby? Consult your vet before changing her diet. Cats must lose weight slowly in order to avoid potential health issues.
