You may know February 2nd as Groundhog Day, but did you know that it’s also National Hedgehog Day? Hedgehogs are becoming quite popular. If you have one of these little guys, read on! An Anderson, IN vet offers some tips on pampering a hedgehog below.
Treats
Treats are a great way to pamper your cute pet. Just be sure to stick with foods that are safe for hedgehogs. Hedgie has a taste for creepy-crawlies. Mealworms, crickets, crickets, earthworms, and waxworms are all great treats. Wet cat food; plain, cooked meats; boiled eggs; and certain veggies are also fine. Although you don’t want to give Hedgie too much sugar, he can have small amounts of some fruits, such as papaya, cherries, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, apples, and corn. Peas, beans, and carrots are fine as well. Remember to remove all skins, seeds, and pits from produce first. Ask your vet for more information on safe and unsafe foods.
Toys
Toys make great gifts for hedgehogs. Hedgie really enjoys things he can roll around. Ping-pong balls, cat toy balls, and even small toy cars are all great options for your pint-sized pal. Your spiky buddy may also enjoy a tiny stuffed animal, a dig box, or some mazes or tunnels. Hedgehogs seem to like bright colors, so keep that in mind when shopping.
Furniture
This is a perfect time to get Hedgie some new digs, or just redecorate a bit. A new hide box is a great option. You can buy one, or repurpose a shoebox or tissue box. You can also get your pet a tiny tent. An exercise wheel is another good option. Just be sure to pick one with a solid bottom.
Playtime
Hedgehogs are very timid, so it’s important to handle them every day. Otherwise, they may become timid or wary. Spend some quality time with your pet! Talk to the little guy gently, and just hang out with him while he’s out of his cage.
Photo Session
One of the best things about having a hedgehog is the fact that these guys take absolutely adorable photos. Snap some cute pics of Hedgie on his special day! You can get some great ideas from hedgehog celebrity Azuki’s Instagram page here.
