Is your canine buddy larger than life? We love big mutts and we cannot lie! Fido will enjoy many of the same things as his smaller buddies, such as treats, toys, and belly rubs. However, big dogs definitely have some specific care needs. An Anderson, IN vet offers some advice on grooming your furry buddy in this article.
Easy Access
One challenge of grooming a larger dog is just finding a space that Fido can access easily. A walk-in shower is a great option, but what if you don’t have one? You may have a very hard time getting Fido in and out of the tub, especially if he’s reluctant about it. This is one reason you may want to consider going to a professional groomer. On warm days, you can bring your pooch outdoors and give him his bath in a kiddie pool, or even just with a hose. Many car washes are now adding facilities just for Fido. Check out your local ones, and see if there’s one nearby that can accommodate your pooch.
Protect Your Pipes
A word to the wise for those who are using tubs or showers: get a drain catch or cover. A lot of dog means a lot of fur, so it’s worth your while to take steps to avoid clogged pipes.
Watch For Slipping
Slipping and falling can be just as dangerous for dogs as it is for people. Get a non-slip mat or pad to keep your canine pal from taking (and possibly making) a big spill.
Get The Right Tools
Big dogs need large tools. If your pooch has a thick coat, you may need a few different brushes. Ask your vet for recommendations. Be sure to brush Fido regularly between baths.
Take Your Time
You may find that bathing your furry pal takes more time than you expected. Don’t try to squeeze this task in between events or appointments. Wait until you have at least a few hours free.
Plan For Drying Time
Fido may take quite a while to dry off. You may want to designate a beach towel for him. You can speed the process up a bit by using a blow dryer, as long as he doesn’t mind. Just keep it on low.
