Here at Pendleton Veterinary Clinic, we have a bit of a soft spot for large breeds. Many big dogs are gentle giants that love to just lounge about collecting belly rubs. Of course, just like any other dog, large dogs need proper grooming. An Anderson, IN vet offers tips on grooming larger breeds below.
Start Young
When it comes to big dogs, it’s crucial to get them trained young. This applies to bathtime too! Start getting your canine buddy used to baths before he reaches his full size. Offer treats and praise to sweeten the deal.
Brushing
Be sure to brush your dog regularly between baths. Brushes are definitely not one-size fits all, so ask your vet for specific recommendations.
Bathtime
How often your pup needs baths will depend on the type of coat he has, as well as his lifestyle. If your pooch loves to roll in mud, he’ll probably need more baths than a couch potato. One issue here is that big dogs don’t always fit into bathtubs. You may need to take Fido outside and bathe him in a kiddie pool. You can also look for self-service pet washes, which are becoming a common fixture at car washes and pet stores. In cooler weather, consider taking Fido to the salon.
Products
Always use products made specifically for dogs. Human shampoos are too strong for pets! Use lukewarm, not hot, water, and rinse thoroughly. Also, be careful not to get suds in Fido’s eyes, ears, nose, or mouth. It may be easier to use a pitcher for rinsing.
Double-coated Dogs
Many large breeds have double coats, which makes bathtime even more fun. For these guys, you may want to lather Fido up twice, using diluted shampoo. Your pet will also take quite a while to dry. When it’s hot out, take him for a walk. It may be worth your while to get your pup used to a hair dryer. Just be sure to keep it on the cool setting.
Nail Trims
Nail trims are very important. Overgrown nails are very uncomfortable for dogs, and put a lot of stress on their bones and joints. If you’re uneasy clipping Fido’s claws yourself, ask your vet to demonstrate proper techniques. Or, just book a pawdicure with us!
