Summer is coming up quick. Many of our canine patients love this time of year. After all, Fido gets to run and play in the sun, and enjoy sniffing all sorts of grass. If you have a big dog, read on! Here, an Anderson, IN vet offers some advice on caring for big dogs in hot weather.
Water
First and foremost, make sure Fido always has fresh water. You may want to set out more than one water station, especially if you have a large home or more than one dog. If you have a yard, keep bowls outdoors as well. Clean your pet’s dishes daily, as otherwise they’ll gather dirt and bacteria. Also, bring water with you whenever you take your furry friend off your property. A portable water bottle with an attached dispenser is great for this.
Brushing
Getting dust, dead fur, and dander out of Fido’s coat will help keep him cooler. That’s because these things actually make dogs’ coats feel hotter and itchier. Brush and bathe your pup regularly. At least in summer, you can give Fido his baths outdoors!
Cool Bed
Make sure Fido has a cool, comfy bed to relax in. Try pointing a fan at or over it. Just make sure he can’t knock it over.
Cold Treats
Dogs like cold treats just as much as we do! Buy Fido some doggy ice cream, or freeze some sodium-free broth for him.
Bandana
Another thing you can do on hot days is tie a wet bandana around Fido’s neck. Just don’t leave him unattended: you don’t want him to get caught on anything.
Schedule
Exercise and activity are both very important for dogs. Walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.
Paw Care
Our canine pals can get painful paw burns in summer. Keep Fido on soft ground as much as possible, and use paw balm to protect and moisturize his feet. Check your furry pal’s paw pads regularly, to make sure he doesn’t have bits of tar or pebbles stuck in them.
Swimming
Swimming can be great for large dogs, as the water supports their weight. Just be cautious: some large breeds get tired very quickly. Ask your vet for specific advice.
