Leaving Your Cat Home Alone

Does your cat stay home alone while you go to work to earn money for catnip and kitty litter? Fluffy is quite independent, so she usually does just fine by herself for short periods. However, you will want to take a few steps to keep your feline friend safe, happy, and comfortable while you’re gone. An Anderson, IN vet discusses leaving your kitty home by herself in this article.

Kittyproofing

Kitties are very curious and playful, not to mention occasionally reckless. That’s a dangerous combination! Make your home safe for Fluffy by removing anything that could be a hazard. This includes things like toxic plants, wires and cords, chemicals, medication, and anything small or sharp. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Background Noise

Cats have tried very hard to convince us that they are aloof and uncaring, but we’re not falling for it. These little furballs are actually quite emotional! Kitties often get lonely and depressed when they’re left alone too long. One way to help keep Fluffy from feeling too lonely is to turn on some background noise for her. A radio or TV is fine.

Kitty TV

Speaking of TV, did you know that you can get DVDs or downloads shows that were made just for cats? Results may vary.

Toys

We always recommend that people take time to play with their cats daily. However, Fluffy should also have some toys that she can play with alone, like catnip mice. Rotate your furball’s playthings out regularly to keep things fun and fresh for her.

Lights

If you won’t be back before dark, leave a light on for Fluffy. No one enjoys sitting home alone in a dark, quiet house!

Boxes

Make your home fun and interesting for Fluffy by setting out things like bags and boxes for her to explore and conquer.

Climate Control

Keep your climate control running while you’re out. You don’t want your kitty getting uncomfortably hot or cold!

Window View

We probably don’t have to tell you that cats really enjoy lounging around. They’re also quite fond of monitoring what’s going on around them. Get Fluffy a comfy window seat with a good view. She may spend hours relaxing and spying on birds and squirrels! Just make sure your window closes securely.
