Bearded Dragon Care Tips

Bearded dragons are enjoying a sudden rise in popularity. These cute, charming little lizards really do make lovable little pets. Of course, reptiles have some very specific care needs, so it’s important to do some research before adopting one. An Anderson, IN vet offers some advice on caring for a bearded dragon in this article.

Get A Good Vivarium

Reptiles are quite fragile, in that they need specific environmental conditions to thrive. The cage size will depend on the age of your pet, but bigger is always better. You’ll need to make sure the tank or vivarium is properly ventilated. It should be set up with two different temperature zones: one should be warmer than the other. Both can be a bit cooler at night. Ask your vet for specific parameters.

Light Cycle

You’ll also need a UV tube light. This is very important! Without it, your beardie could develop metabolic bone disease (MBD) which is a debilitating and painful degeneration of the skeletal system. It’s important for reptiles to have a sense of the usual day and night cycle. Keep the lights on a timed cycle, so that they’re turned off at night. Ask your vet for tips.

Good Food

No surprises here: a good diet is absolutely crucial to your lizard’s health and well-being. Some of the things on the menu would include leafy greens; peppers; carrots. Beardies also like things like crickets, mealworms, roaches, and waxworms. You’ll need to dust the bugs with nutritional powder before serving them to your pet. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Offer Space

Bearded dragons are fairly active, and they like to move around and explore things. Make sure your dinosaur has plenty of room.

Not Enough Research

We’ve touched on some basics of bearded dragon care, but there really is a lot more to learn about these cute and lovable lizards. Take time to do some research. As the saying says, knowledge is power!

Handle Properly

Ask your vet for tips on handling your tiny dinosaur. A few pointers: never pick your lizard up by the tail. You also want to avoid startling him by swooping him up from behind.

TLC

Like any other pet, bearded dragons need love and attention. They are living beings, and should be treated with kindness and respect.
