April is Adopt A Greyhound Month! These beautiful, sweet dogs could definitely use the PR. As you may know, many Greyhounds suffered terribly in the racing industry. While we’re happy to see more laws restricting dog racing, there are still many retired race dogs in need of loving homes. An Anderson, IN vet lists some reasons to consider adopting a greyhound below. 

Calm Personalities 

Many assume that Greyhounds need several hours of vigorous exercise every day. That’s not exactly correct. Fido will need a few vigorous daily walks. However, once he’s burned off those zoomies, he’ll probably just want to relax. That mellow personality makes him a great fit for apartment dwellers! 

Family Pets

While every dog is unique, Greyhounds tend to be quite gentle, and are often wonderful with children. Retired race dogs are often quite cuddly and affectionate, likely because they have been kenneled so much.

Great For Joggers 

Is running your preferred form of exercise? You really couldn’t choose a better jogging buddy than Fido. Just be sure to get a good harness: Greyhounds do have strong prey drive, and are prone to bolting off after squirrels. (Note: because of their small heads, Greyhounds can slip out of regular collars. You’ll need to use a harness or a martingale collar.)

Easy Grooming 

Fido is a pretty easy keeper in this area. You’ll just have to brush him and give him the occasional bath. (Nail trims and dental care are also important.) 

Intelligence 

Greyhounds are extremely smart. In fact, they can make wonderful assistance dogs. One standout pooch, Comet, is a great example of this. You can read Comet’s story in the book: Comet’s Tale: How the Dog I Rescued Saved My Life.

Tips 

Greyhounds have some unique physiological qualities to be aware of. For instance, Fido is extremely sensitive to chemicals and medications. That will come into play when choosing things like shampoos and parasite control products, and will also be a factor in giving him medications. Because they are so thin, these guys also need extra protection from heat and cold. Last but not least: your furry pal’s bloodwork will look a little different from that of other pups. Be sure to get a vet that is experienced with these gentle souls.
