It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is coming right up. We have a lot of reasons to be thankful for our feline friends. Kitties are not only absolutely adorable, they’re also fun, cuddly, and, of course, absolutely hilarious. Read on as an Anderson, IN veterinarian offers some tips on keeping your furball happy, healthy, and purring on Turkey Day.
Food
Fluffy will probably sleep through most of the autumn holiday, but she’ll still appreciate a special dinner. Go ahead and make your furry buddy something yummy. Your kitty can enjoy some of that mouthwatering turkey, as long as you remove the skin, bones, and fat. Most types of meat, fish, or poultry are also fine. Other safe options include deli meat, plain canned tuna or salmon, or store-bought treats. Ask your vet for more information.
Guests
Do any of your guests have allergies? Rule 38 of the kitty rulebook dictates that Fluffy must immediately attach herself to humans that are allergic to cats. Be extra thorough with your cleaning. Vacuum and dust thoroughly, change your air filters, and clean the litterbox. You may also want to ask guests to keep their door closed. Otherwise, they’ll probably find your furball snoozing on (or in) their suitcase.
Mischief
Our feline pals are quite playful, which is one reason they’re so good at melting our hearts. That frisky streak can backfire, though. Kitties often practice their pouncing skills on things that really aren’t safe for them to play with. Put anything that isn’t safe out of paws’ reach. That includes small and sharp items, anything with wires or cords, and candles. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Retreat
Just like people, cats all have distinct personalities. Some are bold and outgoing, some are aloof, and some are rather shy. If Fluffy falls into that latter category, she may become uneasy about the commotion. Provide her with a safe, comfy retreat she can go to if she wants to sit out the festivities.
Purrs
At the end of the day, Thanksgiving isn’t really about food: it’s about gratitude. We’re definitely thankful for our feline companions! Do something special for Fluffy, such as getting her a new toy or perhaps some catnip. You can also get that motor going with extra playtime or cuddles. What better way to wind down than by settling in with a purring cat and a good game, show, or movie?
